The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of 20 passengers after a boat capsized on River Benue on Saturday. Eleven survivors have been rescued, and search operations are ongoing to recover missing individuals.
The victims, mostly women and children, were returning to their communities in Apochi and Odenyi, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, after attending the Ocholonya market in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The wooden boat overturned mid-journey, leading to the tragic loss of lives.
Local divers have reportedly recovered several bodies. While official confirmation of the total number of recovered corpses is pending, community sources and witnesses estimate at least 20 fatalities.
The Chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin James, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stated that efforts are being made to collaborate with authorities in Nasarawa State to provide support. Rescue teams, including the Nigerian Navy, have been mobilized to assist in the ongoing recovery mission.
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident, as the community mourns this devastating loss.
