“20 Solar Powered Boreholes Commissioned Across Nigerian States to Boost Access to Safe Drinking Water”
The Abibakr As Siddiq Philanthropic Home has commissioned 20 solar powered boreholes across several Nigerian states, including Kano, Benue, Nasarawa, and Oyo, in a move aimed at expanding access to clean and sustainable drinking water for underserved communities.
The initiative is part of the organization’s broader humanitarian and community development programme focused on addressing water scarcity, improving public health, and supporting rural development. By harnessing solar energy, the boreholes are expected to provide a reliable and environmentally sustainable source of water while reducing dependence on costly fuel powered systems.
Community leaders and beneficiaries welcomed the intervention, describing it as a significant step toward improving living conditions in areas where access to safe drinking water has remained a challenge. Experts have consistently noted that improved water infrastructure plays a vital role in reducing the spread of waterborne diseases, enhancing sanitation, and supporting local economic activities.
The project aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen access to clean water and contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which seeks to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Stakeholders have also emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between philanthropic organizations, governments, and development partners to close the country’s water access gap.
The commissioning of the solar powered boreholes underscores the growing role of private and charitable organizations in complementing public infrastructure development, particularly in communities where access to essential services remains limited.
