2027 PDP Race: Sandy Onor Emerges Presidential Candidate, Promises Action on Poverty and Insecurity
Former Cross River governorship candidate, Sandy Onor, has reportedly secured the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election, in a development that is already reshaping conversations within the country’s opposition politics.
Onor’s emergence is said to have received strong backing from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whose influence within the PDP remains significant despite ongoing internal divisions within the party. Political observers believe the endorsement could strengthen Onor’s visibility nationally as the PDP intensifies efforts to reposition itself before the next presidential election cycle.
Addressing party supporters after clinching the ticket, Onor pledged to focus on tackling rural poverty, insecurity, youth unemployment, and economic inequality if elected president in 2027. He emphasized the need for what he described as “inclusive governance” capable of reconnecting neglected communities to national development.
The PDP presidential hopeful also highlighted insecurity in several parts of Nigeria as a major concern requiring urgent reforms in intelligence gathering, community policing, and economic empowerment. According to him, addressing poverty and lack of opportunities in rural communities is critical to reducing violence and social instability across the country.
Political analysts say Onor’s emergence could alter the internal dynamics of the opposition landscape, especially as major political parties begin early consultations and coalition building ahead of 2027. His alliance with Wike is expected to generate debate within the PDP, where competing blocs continue to jostle for influence following the party’s performance in the 2023 elections.
While supporters view Onor as a consensus figure capable of rebuilding the PDP’s national appeal, critics argue that the party still faces unresolved internal disputes that could affect its electoral prospects. Nonetheless, the announcement has already sparked reactions across Nigeria’s political space, with discussions centering on the future of opposition politics and the battle for voter confidence.
The 2027 presidential contest is expected to be one of Nigeria’s most closely watched political races, as parties prepare strategies to address rising economic pressures, insecurity, governance concerns, and demands for national unity from citizens across the country.
