2027: SDP’s Peter Obafemi Declares Ekiti North Senate Bid, Pledges Stronger Grassroots Representation.
Social Democratic Party (SDP) senatorial candidate for Ekiti North, Otunba Olugbenga Peter Obafemi, has intensified his campaign for the 2027 National Assembly elections, promising to pursue stronger representation and greater engagement with constituents across the district.
Obafemi, popularly known as OPO, is seeking to represent Ekiti North Senatorial District, which comprises Ikole, Oye, Ido Osi, Moba and Ilejemeje Local Government Areas. His campaign has centred on what it describes as accessible leadership, economic opportunities and a stronger connection between constituents and the federal government.
Recent campaign activities have taken Obafemi and his team across the five local government areas as part of a consultation exercise with traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, women, traders, artisans and other grassroots stakeholders. According to the campaign organisation, the consultations are intended to identify local concerns and incorporate them into his proposed legislative agenda.
Obafemi has presented a seven-point development agenda covering youth employment and skills acquisition, agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, inclusive governance and community security. His campaign says the programme is designed to attract greater federal intervention to communities across Ekiti North.
The candidate has also highlighted the need to create more economic opportunities for young people within the district, particularly through skills development, entrepreneurship and support for small and medium-sized businesses. In remarks reported during the consultation tour, he said young people should have opportunities to build their futures within their communities rather than being compelled to seek opportunities elsewhere.
His campaign has further cited proposed interventions in agriculture, including improved access to financing, equipment, storage facilities and markets, while education and healthcare remain part of the broader development priorities outlined by the candidate. Infrastructure, particularly roads and other facilities that connect rural communities to economic centres, also features prominently in his agenda.
The 2027 contest is expected to feature candidates from several political parties. A current pre election compilation based on the final candidate list identifies Obafemi of the SDP alongside candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Congress (APC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The district’s five LGA composition is also reflected in the election data.
Obafemi’s emergence in the senatorial contest follows his participation as the SDP candidate in the 2026 Ekiti governorship election. Major Nigerian outlets, including Channels Television and The Nation, reported his participation in that election and his subsequent statements concerning the conduct of the poll.
The senatorial campaign is developing within a competitive political environment, with other aspirants and candidates also presenting their own arguments around representation and development in Ekiti North. The Guardian, for instance, reported in May 2026 that Dr Funso Ayeni emerged as the ADC’s senatorial candidate for the district and outlined his own plans for legislative advocacy and youth empowerment.
As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, the central issues in Ekiti North are likely to include employment, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and the effectiveness of constituency representation. Candidates will face scrutiny over their records, proposals and ability to translate campaign commitments into measurable legislative and constituency interventions.
For Obafemi, the campaign message is that the Senate should serve as a platform for sustained engagement with constituents and for advocating policies and federal interventions that address the district’s development priorities.
