On November 19, 2024, a significant traffic incident unfolded along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where 32 individuals narrowly escaped death following a series of multiple vehicle collisions. The alarming event took place in the Danco area and involved nine vehicles, highlighting the ongoing concerns regarding road safety and driver behavior in the region.
According to a traffic update provided by Seni Ogunyemi, the Commandant of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the unfortunate series of accidents was attributed primarily to excessive speeding and the subsequent loss of control by one of the drivers involved. The chain reaction began when a Scania truck, which was transporting perishable goods, lost control due to high speed, leading to a collision that severely obstructed traffic on the expressway.
Eyewitness accounts have shed light on the chaos that ensued. It was reported that the Scania truck, after losing control, overturned on the roadway, creating a significant hazard for oncoming traffic. In an attempt to navigate the obstruction, another driver, operating a Sino truck loaded with granites, collided with the fallen truck from behind. This impact triggered a domino effect, resulting in further collisions involving several other vehicles.
Oguyemi detailed the specific vehicles affected by the incident, which included a diverse array of automobiles: a Ford jeep, a Nissan jeep, a Toyota Sienna, a Toyota Highlander, a Mazda bus, a Toyota bus, the aforementioned Scania truck, and a Toyota Camry. Remarkably, despite the scale of the accident, none of the 32 individuals involved—comprising 20 adult males and 12 adult females sustained serious injuries or fatalities.
The aftermath of the collisions caused significant traffic disruption along this busy expressway. However, the prompt response from TRACE operatives and the Sagamu police division played a crucial role in restoring normalcy to the area. Oguyemi noted that traffic conditions were eventually normalized, allowing for the resumption of regular travel along the expressway.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the importance of adhering to speed limits and traffic regulations. As the authorities continue to monitor road safety, incidents like this underscore the need for greater awareness and enforcement of safe driving practices among all road users.
Johnson Idowu, the author of this report, brings over four years of journalism experience, focusing on diverse topics including education, politics, and local news. His commitment to delivering accurate and timely information remains a vital part of the ongoing dialogue about road safety and public awareness in Nigeria. 32 Escape Death in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Multiple Collisions
As traffic authorities continue to address the challenges of road safety, the hope is that lessons learned from such incidents will contribute to improved awareness and preventive measures, ultimately reducing the risks associated with road travel in the region.
