5 killed, 35 injured in Maiduguri blast – Police

Maiduguri — Borno State police confirmed that a bomb explosion at a mosque in the Gamborun area of Maiduguri on Wednesday left five people dead and 35 others wounded. The incident, which occurred at about 6:15 p.m., is being treated as an improvised explosive device (IED) attack, believed carried out by a suspected suicide bomber during congregational prayers.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Nahum Daso, in an interview with newsmen, said the five victims died on the spot while the 35 injured were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical care. The zone has been cordoned off while investigations are underway.

Daso urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to report any suspicious persons, movements or objects to the nearest security formation without delay.
