Nigeria's Security Agencies Record Major Breakthroughs in August* Nigeria's security and regulatory agencies have conducted major nationwide operations in August, resulting in hundreds of arrests, large-scale drug seizures, asset recoveries, and multiple convictions. The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed these figures at a joint security briefing in Abuja. According to Issa-Onilu, the Nigerian Army executed 261 operations nationwide, repelling attacks, dismantling insurgent cells, and rescuing abducted civilians. Some notable achievements include: - *30 terrorists neutralized in Zamfara State* during air and ground strikes - *76 militants, including women and children, surrendered to security forces* in Zamfara - *141 kidnap victims rescued* by the police - *1,950 arrests linked to violent crimes, kidnapping, and banditry* made by the police The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) also reported significant seizures, including over *66,000 kilogrammes of narcotics*. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured *588 convictions* in August alone, recovering more than *₦21 billion* in assets from corruption cases. The NOA Director-General emphasized the importance of intelligence-sharing and public cooperation in disrupting criminal networks. He urged communities to report suspicious movements and resist spreading unverified alerts that fuel panic. *Key Highlights:* - *Nigerian Army:* 261 operations executed, 30 terrorists neutralized in Zamfara - *Police:* 1,950 arrests, 141 kidnap victims rescued - *NDLEA:* Over 66,000 kilogrammes of narcotics seized - *EFCC:* 588 convictions, ₦21 billion recovered in assets - *NOA:* Activated offices across 36 states and 774 local government areas to intensify grassroots engagement and counter misinformation

Biography : Mfawa Omini Abam, Current Nigerian Ambassador to Italy

Mfawa Omini Abam was born on the 25th of April 1964 in Ugep, South-South Nigeria. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Calabar, Nigeria, having earlier obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hon) in French from the same institution in 1987 (DEPARTMENT OF LANGUAGES & LINGUISTICS). He is also a holder of a Certificate of the Nigeria Foreign Service. He attended the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy, Lagos, Nigeria in 1993/1994. In addition, he acquired a professional Diploma from L’ UNIVERSITE DE DAKAR, SENEGAL (INSTITUTE DE FRANCAIS POUR ETUDIANTS ETRANGERS) (YEAR ABROAD).

Abam who started his diplomatic career in 1993 when he obtained a certificate from THE NIGERIA FOREIGN SERVICE ACADEMY 1994 in Lagos and has had a consistent career spanning over twenty-eight years. Prior to his current appointment, as the Nigerian ambassador to Italy.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Among the strategic positions, he held is Protocol Officer in the Office of the Chief of General Staff (the Vice President), from July 1996 to October 1998.  He became  Third Secretary, Embassy of Nigeria, Cotonou, The Republic of Benin (On Attachment)-1998-2000.

2000-2003: Personal Assistant to the Special Presidential Envoy on Conflict Resolutions and Ecowas Special Representative on Côte d’Ivoire and the Mano River Union.

 2003-2007: Counselor/Head of Chancery, Embassy of Nigeria, Tel Aviv, Israel.

 2007 – 2010; CHIEF PROTOCOL OFFICER TO THE WIFE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

MAY 2010 – JUNE 2011; DIRECTOR OF PROTOCOL TO THE WIFE OF THE ACTING PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA

JUNE 2011 – MARCH 2013; DIRECTOR OF PROTOCOL TO THE FIRST LADY, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

MARCH 2013 – DEC. 2013; ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, FIRST UNITED NATIONS DIVISION (INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS DEPARTMENT) MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ABUJA.

DEC. 2013 – MAY 2015; DIRECTOR OF PROTOCOL TO THE FIRST LADY, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

MAY 2015 – FEB.  2016: DEPUTY DIRECTOR, APPOINTMENTS, PROMOTIONS, ESTABLISHMENT & DISCIPLINE DIVISION, MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ABUJA.

FEB. 2016-SEPT. 2018; MINISTER/HEAD OF CHANCERY, EMBASSY OF NIGERIA, WASHINTON DC, USA.

SEPT. 2018 – MAY 2019; MINISTER/HEAD OF POLITICAL DEPT., EMBASSY OF NIGERIA, WASHINTON DC, USA.

MAY 2019 – Dec. 2020; CHIEF OF PROTOCOL, MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS.

 MAY 2021: He was appointed as the AMBASSADOR OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA TO ITALY TILL DATE.

Mfawa Abam is passionate about lawn tennis and other sports and also enjoys reading, traveling, and listening to music. He is married to Ifeoma Uzoamaka Abam and they are blessed with three children.
