The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Sunday inspected proposed road corridors in Edo Central as part of ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure and improve access to rural communities.

The roads inspected include the Amedokhian–Iruele–Awo Road and the Unewa–Ohe–Uzea–Awo Road, located in Esan North East and Esan Central Local Government Areas.

The inspection marks the commencement of the second phase of road development in the area, following the completion of the first phase.

Speaking to journalists during the visit, Governor Okpebholo said the new phase is aimed at consolidating earlier gains and enhancing connectivity across communities.
“The reason for this inspection is because the first section is already completed. This is the second phase.

From here, we are extending the road to Awo, where the railway station is located. It is about a 26-kilometre stretch, and by the end of the project, we should be able to link several communities,” he said.

The governor noted that the project is expected to connect more than 15 communities, opening up the area for economic activities.
“We are going to link over 15 communities in this area to improve access and stimulate development,” he added.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Projects Implementation and Monitoring, Engr. Williams-Bello Phoebe, said the road project is designed to boost rural accessibility and economic productivity, particularly for farmers.

“This road will connect over 15 communities and link to the railway at Ohe. We are also opening up access routes to government farms in the area.

The goal is to enhance movement between rural communities and urban centres for both residents and farmers,” she said.

She described the project area as largely undeveloped but with strong economic potential, noting that contractors have already commenced preliminary assessments.

“As you can see, this is largely virgin land. A contractor has already carried out initial scoping of the project, and more may come on board. We are committed to moving
quickly,” she assured.

The inspection highlights the Okpebholo administration’s commitment to infrastructure development as a key driver of rural-urban integration and agricultural growth in Edo State.
