NiDCOM Urges South Africa to Curb Xenophobic Violence, Says “Crime Has No Nationality”

Nigeria’s diaspora authority, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has called on authorities in South Africa to take decisive action against a resurgence of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians.

The appeal follows growing reports of harassment, intimidation, and violent assaults against migrants in parts of South Africa. NiDCOM stressed that criminal activity should not be used to stigmatize entire nationalities, warning that such narratives risk fueling discrimination and undermining social cohesion.

Chairperson of NiDCOM, Abike Dabiri Erewa, emphasized that “crime has no nationality,” urging South African law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all residents regardless of origin. She called for swift investigations into reported incidents and adequate protection for vulnerable communities.

The commission also encouraged strengthened diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and South Africa to address the root causes of recurring tensions. Analysts note that economic inequality, unemployment, and misinformation have often contributed to periodic outbreaks of xenophobic violence in the region.

South African authorities have previously condemned xenophobic attacks and pledged to protect all residents. However, rights groups argue that more consistent enforcement and community level interventions are needed to prevent further escalation.

NiDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation and supporting affected Nigerians, while urging citizens abroad to remain law-abiding and vigilant.
