The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who fatally shot a suspect in Effurun will face prosecution for murder.
The Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, describing the incident as disturbing and unjustifiable.
The officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, was captured in a viral video shooting 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who had reportedly been arrested over a parcel suspected to contain a pistol and live ammunition.
Edafe said Usman, along with other members of his operational team, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
He noted that the officer’s actions were a clear violation of police operational guidelines, stressing that the conduct was difficult to explain.
“It is a very sad incident. In my years as PRO, this is one of the most difficult cases to explain,” Edafe said.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after police operatives in Effurun responded to intelligence that the suspect had been detained by motor park workers over the suspicious parcel.
According to the police, the suspect had already been restrained and was not posing any threat when he was shot.
“The instruction was to bring the suspect in.
Instead, the officer shot a man who was already tied up and begging for his life. It is not justifiable in any way,” Edafe added.
He assured the public that the officer would not be shielded from justice and would be charged with murder in court.
Edafe also confirmed that the entire five-man team involved in the operation has been redeployed to Abuja, noting that they failed to intervene or restrain their colleague during the incident.
He emphasized that officers are duty-bound to prevent misconduct within their ranks and reiterated that every suspect has a right to life.
The Command further stressed that abuse of firearms by security personnel will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
