di decision na reached for di council’s third-quarter hybrid meeting held on top august 13, 2026, for di headquarters for di nigerian law school for bwari, abuja. According to reports, di council found dat facilities for di institution de inappropriate and inadequate for establishing and operating a faculty for law.

di council also raised concerns ova di university’s admission practices, stating dat atiba university had admitted and graduated law students without obtaining di required regulatory approval.

di 10-year moratorium represents a significant regulatory intervention and underscores di cle’s responsibility to ensure dat institutions dey offer professional legal education meet established academic, infrastructural and regulatory standards.

di development na particularly significant for students and graduates for atiba university’s law programme. Earlier for august, di kontri association for nigerian students (nans) issued a seven-day ultimatum go di university ova concerns wey concern students and graduates who don completed dia academic programmes but are reportedly no fit to proceed go di nigerian law school sake of unresolved regulatory wahala.

nans say some affected students begin dia studies as far back as 2020 and had completed examinations and paid substantial tuition and oda fees, only to face uncertainty ova dia progression to professional legal training.

di students’ bodi demanded, among oda measures, dat atiba university provide a clear pathway for eligible graduates to proceed go di nigerian law school, publish accurate records for students affected by di regulatory dispute, disclose relevant communications wit di cle and provide transparency regarding academic and financial records.

di controversy highlights a broader wahala for nigeria’s higher-education system: students enrolled for regulated professional programmes fit be particularly vulnerable wen institutions fail to maintain or collect di approvals required by professional regulatory bodies.

di cle’s latest decision also com alongside di approval for five oda nigerian universities to commence law programmes from di 2026/2027 academic session. Di approved institutions are amadeus university, amazi, abia state; akwa ibom state university; european university for nigeria, abuja; oduduwa university, ipetu-modu, osun state; and peaceland university, enugu state. Each na first approved for a quota for 50 students for di 100-level intake.

di contrasting decisions — approving para para law faculties while imposing a lengthy moratorium on top atiba university — demonstrate di council’s emphasis on top compliance wit prescribed standards before institutions fit offer legal education.

for affected atiba university students and graduates, however, di immediate concern remains how di regulatory decision go affect dia academic records and prospects for entering di nigerian law school. Nans don dem dey call for a concrete resolution dat protects students who fit don enta di programme without being get hand di institution’s regulatory shortcomings.

obaland magazine understands say di mata don na im be say moved beyond an institutional accreditation kweshion to one involving student welfare, regulatory accountability and di integrity for professional legal education for nigeria.

as di situation develops, clarity from atiba university and di relevant regulatory authorities go de essential, particularly regarding di level for students already enrolled or graduated from di law programme and di mechanisms available to dos affected.
