A military transport plane crashed in Colombia’s southern Amazon region, killing at least 80 troops and injuring dozens more. The Lockheed Martin-built C-130 Hercules aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Puerto Leguizamo, near the border with Ecuador, on March 23, 2026.
Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed “deep sorrow” over the accident, saying military units were already at the scene. The cause of the crash is still unknown, but it’s being investigated. The plane was carrying 125 people, including 114 passengers and 11 crew members

The crash site showed a badly damaged fuselage aflame in a forest clearing, with thick black smoke rising. Local residents and military personnel were among the first to respond, pulling survivors from the wreckage.
This incident is the second C-130 Hercules crash in South America in under a month, following a Bolivian military cargo plane crash on February 27, which killed at least 24 people.
