A three-story student hostel, Pentagon Lodge, near Alex Ekwueme Federal University (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi State, collapsed on July 25, 2025, without causing any fatalities. The building, which housed students, developed cracks before the incident, prompting some occupants to vacate the premises. Fortunately, the collapse occurred during lecture hours when most students were away attending classes, minimizing potential casualties.
Students’ belongings were trapped in the rubble, and some students sustained minor distress.The Ebonyi State Government sealed off the building and surrounding structures for integrity tests and evacuated students to prevent further risk
The State Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Ekechi Inyima, led a delegation to the site and directed the sealing of the property.
The government is collaborating with relevant agencies to provide temporary accommodation for displaced students.
A full-scale investigation into the collapse has been urged to hold accountable any contractors, engineers, or regulators found responsible
