The Niger State Police Command has discovered the lifeless body of a newborn, believed to be just a day old, abandoned in a farmland in Tayi village, near Minna, Niger.
SP Waisu Abiodun, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday. He stated that on August 9, the GRA Police Division received a report about the discovery of the newborn’s body.
Police officers from the GRA Division responded to the scene and involved welfare officials from the Chanchaga Local Government Area. A medical practitioner was also called in, who examined the baby and confirmed that it was dead.
The case is currently under investigation, with the help of the local community, to identify and apprehend the person responsible for this act.
A local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, speculated that the baby might have been abandoned by a woman who gave birth out of wedlock. The resident suggested that the child was likely left alive but died due to severe exposure to the cold—a first-time occurrence in the area.
