The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ogun State, Oluwasina Ogungbade, has clarified that Ogbonna Ogbojionu, an Abia State indigene recently freed after 22 years in prison, was lawfully convicted for armed robbery and murder, not for buying a stolen generator as speculated on social media.
According to Ogungbade, Ogbonna and his accomplices attacked an ELF petrol station , stealing a 10 KVA Lister generator and killing a guard, Moses Bankole, in the process. Ogbonna was arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced to death for his role in the crime.
The AG disputed claims that Ogbonna was wrongly convicted, stating that the evidence presented during the trial, including Ogbonna’s confessional statement, supported his guilt. Ogungbade also noted that Ogbonna’s failure to present witnesses or evidence to counter the accusations against him left the court with no option but to convict him.

Ogbonna’s death sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in 2025. Ogungbade urged Nigerians not to be swayed by false narratives about Ogbonna’s case, emphasizing the need to consider the victims and their families.
The AG concluded by stating that Ogbonna’s crime had severe consequences, includinghttps://obalandmagazine.com/abia-state-indig…-years-in-prison/ the loss of life, and that attempts to sanitize his conduct with falsehoods would do fresh injustice to the victims.
