The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected the result of the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election, held on Saturday. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Dr. Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won the election with 90,408 votes.
The APC alleged that its candidate, Chief Azuka Okwuosa, was held hostage in his home by men of the Anambra Vigilance Group during the election. The party also claimed that a state government official led members of Agunaechemba, the state security outfit, to restrict APC candidates in Orsumenyi.
The APC’s Chairman in Anambra, Chief Basil Ejidike, and governorship candidate, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu, expressed outrage over the alleged irregularities. Ukachukwu accused the state security outfit of committing a serious breach of the electoral process and questioned why nobody had been arrested.
The APC has vowed to challenge the declared result, insisting it did not reflect the people’s will. Ukachukwu expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the November 8 governorship election.
