Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor with Arise TV, tragically lost her life in an armed robbery attack at her residence in Abuja. The incident occurred when 15 armed robbers invaded the compound, shooting and killing one vigilante while tying up four others.
The robbers, who operated for about an hour and a half, robbed 10 flats in the building. Maduagwu allegedly jumped from her second-floor apartment in a desperate attempt to escape the intruders, sustaining fatal injuries.
President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. The Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigeria Union of Journalists have also condemned the attack, calling for improved security measures to protect citizens and journalis
Several notable figures, including the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, have paid tribute to Maduagwu’s memory. They described her as a brilliant and dedicated journalist whose life was cut short in her prime.
The Obidient Movement has demanded increased measures to combat insecurity and protect lives and property. The FCT Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to ensuring justice is served and has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
