Barau Jibrin Says Remi Tinubu’s Commitment and Punctuality in Senate Prepared Her for Nigeria’s First Lady Role.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has praised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing her elevation to the nation’s highest ceremonial office as a reflection of years of dedication, discipline, and exemplary service in the National Assembly.

Speaking at a public event, Barau stated that Oluremi Tinubu’s consistent punctuality, commitment to legislative duties, and unwavering work ethic during her time in the Senate distinguished her from many of her peers. According to him, those qualities demonstrated a level of discipline that ultimately positioned her for greater national responsibility.

Barau remarked that “God rewarded” the former senator with the role of First Lady because of her steadfast commitment to public service. His comments highlighted her record as a lawmaker rather than suggesting a formal criterion for assuming the position, which is traditionally held by the spouse of Nigeria’s elected president.

Oluremi Tinubu represented Lagos Central Senatorial District in the Senate for three consecutive terms between 2011 and 2023. Throughout her legislative career, she was involved in debates on governance, social welfare, women’s empowerment, education, and youth development. She also chaired and served on several Senate committees before becoming Nigeria’s First Lady following the inauguration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2023.

Since assuming her current role, the First Lady has championed initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, healthcare, education, food security, and social intervention through the Renewed Hope Initiative, a programme aimed at supporting vulnerable Nigerians across the country.

Barau’s remarks have generated public discussion, with supporters viewing them as recognition of Oluremi Tinubu’s legislative record and critics noting that the office of First Lady is not an elected position but one that accompanies the presidency. Nonetheless, the comments have renewed attention on her years of public service and contributions to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
