The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has sanctioned a palace chief, a staff member, and a queen following the unauthorized entry of a social media influencer, Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, into the Benin Palace.

In a statement issued by its Secretary, Frank Trabor, the Council described the incident, which occurred on March 6, 2026, as a serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred palace grounds.

According to the Council, Adelaja, popularly known as “Peller,” gained access to the palace without approval and engaged in activities that disrupted peace and brought embarrassment to the revered institution.

The BTC emphasized that the palace remains the spiritual and traditional seat of Ewuare II and is governed by strict customs and protocols, not a venue for casual visits or social media content creation.

Following a preliminary investigation, the Council announced disciplinary actions against those found culpable.

A palace chief implicated in the incident has been suspended indefinitely, while a staff member, identified as Mr. Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police and charged to court for alleged breach of peace and aiding the unauthorized entry.

The Council also disclosed that a queen who appeared in the incident is undergoing disciplinary proceedings, which, in line with Benin customs, could lead to her removal from the palace.

It further revealed that Adelaja was invited to appear before a committee of chiefs to explain his actions but failed to honour the invitation.

The Council has now demanded that he present himself immediately and tender an unreserved written apology for the incident, warning that failure to comply may result in legal action. Law enforcement agencies have been notified and are on standby to act.

Reaffirming its role as custodian of Benin traditions, the Council assured the public of its commitment to preserving the sanctity and dignity of the Benin throne, warning that any attempt to undermine the institution would be firmly addressed.
