The Governor made this known during the 2025 Children’s Day celebration held on Tuesday, May 27, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City a colourful event that featured the grand finale of the Governor’s Cup for Secondary Schools and a series of uplifting activities celebrating Edo’s young talents.

Speaking at the gathering, Governor Okpebholo urged students to steer clear of harmful practices, reminding them that their futures hold limitless promise if properly nurtured. He reiterated the government’s commitment to child safety, youth development, and quality education.

“To our dear children, you are the leaders of tomorrow. Reject cultism, shun vices, and channel your energy into productive pursuits. This administration is determined to support your dreams, safeguard your rights, and create opportunities for your success,” the Governor charged.

To recognize excellence and encourage students, the Governor announced a five-million-naira cash prize each for two female students from Edo State who clinched second place nationally in the NDDC Quiz Challenge, having earlier emerged champions in the South-South region. He further assured that future champions in similar contests would enjoy state sponsored international trips as part of the government’s commitment to celebrating academic distinction.

Also, to promote grassroots sports and youth engagement, Governor Okpebholo donated two brand new Hiace buses one each to Ogbe Secondary School, Benin City, and Indian College, Benin City winners of the male and female categories of the Governor’s Cup football tournament respectively.

Highlighting these initiatives, Governor Okpebholo said:

“Two brilliant students from Itohan Girls’ Grammar School represented Edo State in the NDDC Quiz Challenge grand finale, coming first in the South-South and second nationally. We honoured them with cash prizes and moving forward, future winners will be sponsored abroad because excellence must be rewarded globally.”

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu, emphasized the vital role of parents, schools, and communities in raising well rounded, disciplined, and responsible children.

The day’s highlight was the much anticipated Governor’s Cup finals, where Indian College, Benin City, edged St. Angela’s Grammar School, Jattu, 1-0 to clinch the female trophy. In the male category, Ogbe Secondary School, Benin City, defeated St. Peter’s Grammar School, Agenebode, in an electrifying contest.
