Christian Conscience Calls for Unity, Rejects Divisive Politics as Nigeria Prepares for 2027 Elections.

The Christian Conscience Group has urged Nigerian politicians and other political stakeholders to reject divisive rhetoric and the politics of bitterness as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.

The group called for a more issue based and responsible political culture, warning that inflammatory rhetoric and deepening ethnic, religious and regional divisions could undermine national unity and peaceful democratic participation.

Christian Conscience, a non denominational civil society organisation, has repeatedly called on political actors to place Nigeria’s unity and national interest above personal and partisan ambitions. The group has also urged politicians who lose party primaries to pursue legitimate internal mechanisms for redress rather than immediately resorting to defections.

The latest appeal comes amid growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and political groups already positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle. The group’s call also reflects wider concerns over the potential for political competition to fuel tension in a country marked by significant ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.

Stakeholders across Nigeria have similarly stressed the importance of tolerance, peaceful coexistence and responsible leadership ahead of the polls. Government officials and religious leaders have urged political and community actors to prevent the manipulation of identity and religion in ways that could encourage hatred, discrimination or violence.

As political campaigns gather momentum, the debate over national cohesion is expected to remain central to Nigeria’s democratic conversation. The challenge for political parties and candidates will be to compete vigorously while ensuring that political differences do not become a source of division or threaten the country’s democratic stability.

For voters, the group’s position reinforces the importance of evaluating candidates and political parties based on policies, competence, accountability and their commitment to Nigeria’s unity, rather than allowing divisive rhetoric to dominate the electoral process.
