Concerned Citizens of Oredo Local Government Area in Edo State have commended Hon. Sunny Aguebor, a People’s Democratic Party chieftain for yielding to their appeal to contest the Edo South Senatorial elections.

The leader of the Concerned Citizens of Oredo, Hon Olaye Raymond who led over one hundred of its members to a meeting with the senatorial hopeful in Benin City, yesterday said Hon. Sunny Aguebor is very qualified to represent them.

He disclosed that  they have come to mount pressure on him to contest the election due to his philanthropic pedigree which has impacted on several Edo sons and daughters, adding that they no longer want people who take politics as a business and do not have businesses of their own as source of livelihood.

“We have come to meet you as a group to tell you to get yourself prepared. This is the right time; we want people who are very close to us, who we can always meet at any time, any day. We want people in politics who can survive without politics.

In his response, Hon. Sunny Aguebor, Chairman, Bibi Group of Companies, said he is delighted to note that people are watching, observing and taking record of one’s achievements, adding that it is true that in the past twenty two years, he has been touching lives and doing things differently, creating opportunities for people to live and for people to be happy.

“We have a foundation that has also given scholarships to Edo indigenes. As we speak that foundation has produced a lot of graduates, some of them are employed and some have travelled out of the country.

“All these and many more we have achieved using our individual personal resources. It is true too that given the instrumentality of government one can do much better. Now that you have come to recognize that fact and have come to urge me to contest the election, I am not going to refuse your request.

“I hereby accept fully, the request to contest the Edo South Senatorial election and I am also assuring you that in the next couple of days I will pick the forms. I want to plead with you as we move into this journey to be steadfast and we should be committed because change is possible.

“You are all aware that Nigeria has really derailed and the country needs to be rescued and it should not be the job of the executive alone rather, the legislature has a very big role to play. Nigeria democracy is premised on a tripod, the judiciary, executive and legislature.

“The only difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is the presence of the National legislative arm of government and the moment there is no legislature it is called dictatorship. So far people tend to blame the executive for all the wrong going on in the society and I think they are very wrong because if you have a national assembly that is not prepared to ask questions we will continue to derail and that is what is happening to Nigeria.

“I want to assure you, by the grace of God when I am elected, I will go there to ask questions. Imagine a situation now that our country is indebted into trillions of Naira and the same man at the head of government goes with another request to borrow more and nobody is asking him about the one already borrowed how it was spent.

“That is the job of the National Assembly, they should be able to ask questions. But we are not getting that for now, we need people who will rescue Nigeria,” he added.

According to him, rescuing Nigeria will not be the sole function of the executive, the legislature must be properly energized and the right people must be put in the National Assembly.

In his words, “we do not need yes men, we want people that can ask questions and I am assuring you that I will not disappoint you and may God bless all of us”
