“Deadly Tornado Outbreak in Southwest Michigan Leaves Four Dead, Dozens Injured”
At least four people have been confirmed dead and more than a dozen others injured after powerful tornadoes swept through parts of Michigan, devastating communities in Branch County and Cass County. Local authorities say the violent storms struck on Friday, flattening homes, damaging infrastructure, and leaving hundreds of residents without electricity as emergency crews launched large scale rescue and recovery operations.
Officials reported that the hardest hit area was near Union City, where a tornado tore through the community around Union Lake. The Branch County Sheriff’s Office confirmed three fatalities and at least twelve injuries in the county, with several victims requiring hospital treatment. In neighboring Cass County, authorities confirmed one additional death and multiple injuries after another tornado touched down, leaving a trail of destruction across residential areas and farmland.
Emergency responders have been working through debris fields, damaged buildings, and downed power lines as local officials conduct damage assessments. According to the National Weather Service, the severe weather system produced at least one confirmed tornado, fueled by a clash between warm, moisture laden air from the Gulf of Mexico and colder air over the Great Lakes region. The resulting instability created conditions for rapidly forming and highly destructive storms across southern Michigan.

In response to the disaster, Gretchen Whitmer announced the activation of the state’s Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response efforts and provide support to affected communities. Authorities say extensive damage to utility lines and infrastructure has left hundreds of residents without electricity, and power restoration could take several days as repair crews work to rebuild damaged networks.

Local officials have urged residents to avoid severely affected areas while search and rescue operations and structural safety inspections continue. Emergency teams remain on the ground assessing the scale of destruction and supporting displaced families as the region begins recovery from one of the deadliest early season tornado events in the state in recent years.
