The Edo State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has announced the continuation of its ongoing withdrawal of medical services, citing worsening insecurity and the abduction of one of its members in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.
In a joint statement, the Edo NMA Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, and the State Secretary, Dr. Iluobe Inegbenosun, said medical services would remain suspended until their kidnapped colleague is released unharmed.
The association urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to urgently overhaul the state’s security architecture, calling for the integration of local vigilante groups alongside strict monitoring and evaluation to address rising insecurity across Edo State.
According to the statement, the decision to extend the strike followed an extensive meeting with key stakeholders, with the NMA stressing that the action would continue indefinitely unless the abducted doctor is freed safely.
“We insist that the security of lives and property is paramount and should not be taken lightly. Our member held by kidnappers in Auchi must be released unhurt. Until then, the withdrawal of services will continue,” Dr. Oseghale said.
The association also condemned alleged intimidation of doctors in the state, warning that such actions could worsen the situation.
The NMA called on the Edo State Government to demonstrate immediate commitment to protecting lives and property, cautioning that private medical practitioners may join the strike if there is no swift resolution to the crisis.
