The Edo State Government, in partnership with the Africa Initiative for Peace, has flagged off the ‘One Million Trees for Peace’ initiative as part of activities to commemorate World Environment Day 2025.

The event, held in Ehor, Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, focused on the global theme ‘Eliminating Plastic Pollution’ while advocating for environmental sustainability and peace through tree planting and forest preservation.

Speaking at the occasion, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mallam Gani Audu, commended the Africa Initiative for Peace, led by Mrs. Bernadette Strebel, for its contribution to environmental protection. He assured participants of the state government’s unwavering support towards ensuring the project’s long-term success.
In his remarks, Hon. Valentine Owamagbe Asuen, Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission, welcomed dignitaries and environmental advocates to the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, which marked the start of the year’s tree-planting campaign across the state.
Prominent figures present included Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomole, and Chief Emma Iyase, who represented His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin. The highlight of the event was the ceremonial planting of trees by the dignitaries, followed by an inspection tour of the Clara Oshiomole Forest Reserves.
The initiative is part of the state’s wider commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable forestry management. The government, through the Edo State Forestry Commission, has been implementing policies aimed at preserving forest reserves and promoting eco-friendly practices.
Participants lauded the visionary leadership of Hon. Valentine Owamagbe Asuen, whose dedication to environmental conservation has been instrumental in driving the initiative. Stakeholders described him as a key force behind the state’s growing reputation for sustainable forest management and environmental protection.
