The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has led an extensive statewide forest clearance operation aimed at flushing out criminal elements and strengthening security across the state.
According to the Edo State Police Command, the operation, which lasted from May 30 to June 5, 2026, covered major forest corridors in Edo Central Senatorial District, including the Ubiaja, Uzea, and Uromi/Amedokhian forests. Security operatives also extended the exercise to key routes in Edo South, particularly the Benin-Lagos and Benin-Akure expressways.
To enhance operational effectiveness, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, deployed police air assets equipped with General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), working alongside the Command’s Drone Unit to provide real-time aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering, and operational support for personnel on the ground.
During the operation, CP Agbonika personally visited the Sunday Camp axis in Ovia North-East Local Government Area following reports alleging that residents were killed during a night-time security operation. The Commissioner clarified that investigations showed the claims were false and misleading.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the police to engage with community leaders, religious groups, school administrators, humanitarian workers, and residents on prevailing security concerns. Discussions focused on improving emergency preparedness, strengthening access control measures, expanding surveillance coverage, and enhancing response capabilities.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across Edo State, assuring residents that sustained security operations will continue to make the state unsafe for criminal elements.
