The Edo State Police Command has expressed deep concern over the increasing trend of road blockages and highway obstructions under the guise of protests within the State. Such actions are in direct violation of laws governing public assemblies and will no longer be tolerated.
The Command emphasises that while the Constitution guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, this right is not unrestricted. It must be exercised within the legal framework and established protocols.
Road‑blocks, obstruction of vehicular or pedestrian movement, disruption of commerce, or any act undermining public peace and order constitutes a criminal offence. These acts deliberately interfere with the rights of law‑abiding citizens and will attract immediate and firm law‑enforcement action.
With immediate effect, any individual or group found engaging in the obstruction of public highways will be arrested without hesitation and prosecuted under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, FDC, strongly cautions organisers, pressure groups, and individuals to desist from unlawful assemblies.
The Edo State Police Command remains committed to enforcing the law, protecting public order, and safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all residents across the State.
