The Edo State Police Command has issued a strong warning against attacks on police officers, insisting that motorists must comply with lawful checks at security checkpoints.
The Command recalled that on December 24, 2025, it had appealed to members of the public to slow down at checkpoints and submit to lawful enquiries in the interest of public safety. It reiterated that there is no justification for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint, except with the intention to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers on duty.
The warning follows a recent incident at Iyekogba Estate Gate, Benin City, where a reckless driver allegedly drove against traffic, breached a police checkpoint barricade, turned back and drove into officers on lawful duty.
Three police personnel were reportedly knocked down in the incident.The suspect was later restrained and arrested after crashing into multiple vehicles.
The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention.Preliminary investigations identified the suspect as Nsikak Okon, ‘M’, aged 19, an unlicensed driver.
A black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV valued at ₦28 million, allegedly belonging to him, was recovered. Police said the vehicle, which has been in use since May 2024, was unregistered.
Items recovered from the suspect include a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid believed to be diluted refnol.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, Monday Agbonika, fdc, emphasized that any individual who deliberately attacks or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will not be spared, stressing that “enough is enough.”
The Command assured residents that it remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety across the state.
