The Edo State Police Command has dismantled an extortion syndicate allegedly involving serving and dismissed police officers operating in Benin City and its environs.

The Command, led by Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, disclosed that the breakthrough followed a series of complaints from residents who accused individuals posing as police officers of harassment, abduction, and extortion.

According to the police, the suspects operated around the Teboga axis off Aduwawa, where they intercepted unsuspecting victims, forced them into vehicles, drove them across parts of Benin City, and coerced them into withdrawing money through Point of Sale (POS) operators.

Acting on the reports, the Commissioner of Police ordered a discreet, intelligence-led investigation. The operation, supported by surveillance and coordinated tactical efforts, led to the arrest of several suspects linked to the criminal network.
Those arrested include a POS operator, Goodluck Jaja; ASP Bonny Paul Onajite; Inspectors Ehubarieme Wisdom and Arebame God’s Power; Corporals Mordi Philip and Okon Elvis; a dismissed police corporal, Destiny Emmanuel; and two commercial drivers, Samuel Nicholas and Etim Bright.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects formed an organized syndicate involved in abduction and extortion, using police uniforms and equipment to deceive victims and evade suspicion.
The Command stated that serving officers implicated in the case are currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures, including orderly room trials, after which they will be charged to court alongside other suspects.
Police authorities have called on members of the public who may have fallen victim to the syndicate to come forward with useful information to aid ongoing investigations and prosecution.
The Command also cautioned POS operators and business owners against facilitating suspicious transactions, warning that anyone found complicit in criminal activities will face arrest and prosecution.
Reaffirming its commitment to restoring public confidence, the Police said no individual, regardless of rank or status, will be shielded from justice.
Residents were encouraged to report complaints through the Police Complainant Response Unit (CRU) on 08100389992 or the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) on 08150999335.
