Edo State Establishes Gaming and Lottery Regulatory Commission

The Edo State Government has inaugurated the first-ever Edo State Gaming and Lottery Regulatory Commission, marking a significant step in the formal regulation of the state’s growing gaming industry.

Governor Monday Okpebholo approved the establishment of the Commission to oversee, regulate, and license gaming and lottery operations in Edo. The Commission is tasked with ensuring transparency, protecting participants, and increasing internally generated revenue through structured oversight of gaming activities.

The Governor appointed former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Frank Okiye, as Chairman of the Commission. In his acceptance speech, Okiye pledged to uphold integrity and fairness in the Commission’s dealings, noting that the gaming industry must be operated with clear rules to attract legitimate investors and protect citizens.

The Commission is expected to provide a legal framework for the gaming industry, curb unregulated betting operations, and channel tax revenues toward public development.

This marks Edo’s first structured attempt to create a sustainable, transparent, and investor-friendly environment for the gaming sector, signalling the government’s commitment to diversifying revenue sources and formalising emerging industries.
