Edo State Government Clarifies Stance on Peter Obi’s Visit, Emphasizes Need for Security Protocols.

The Edo State Government has moved to clarify recent comments made by Governor Monday Okpebholo regarding the visit of former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, emphasizing that the state remains open to all Nigerians — but with strict adherence to security protocols.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the government addressed what it described as “misinterpretations” of the Governor’s remarks, insisting that there was no threat issued against Mr. Obi. Rather, the Governor had underscored the importance of high-profile individuals obtaining security clearance before undertaking public engagements within Edo State.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the State, Governor Okpebholo has a constitutional obligation to protect lives and property,” the statement said. “This includes ensuring appropriate security arrangements are in place during high-profile visits, especially those likely to attract large crowds or media attention.”

The government cited rising insecurity in parts of the country, including targeted attacks and kidnappings of religious leaders — particularly Catholic priests — as part of the context for the Governor’s appeal. Edo State has not been immune to such incidents, with cases of abductions and killings involving clergy and seminarians in recent years.

The statement also referenced the importance of discretion in public donations, especially to churches and hospitals, which can become unintended targets due to increased visibility. Quoting Matthew 6:2–4, the Governor advised that such acts of charity should be carried out quietly and in consultation with security agencies to avoid endangering the recipients.

“These comments are rooted in both security intelligence and moral responsibility,” the statement noted, while drawing a contrast with past incidents, including the detention of Nasir El-Rufai by Peter Obi during his tenure as Anambra State Governor — a reference made to dispel accusations of hypocrisy.

The government further warned against politicizing the Governor’s remarks, describing attempts to twist his message for political advantage as irresponsible.

“Governor Okpebholo’s administration is committed to building a safe and inclusive Edo State. His call for coordination should be recognized as an act of responsible leadership,” the statement concluded. “All well-meaning Nigerians are welcome to visit, provided security protocols are followed.”
