Towards averting potential flooding in Benin City environs, the Executive Secretary of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (EdoSEMA), Hon. Jerry Idahosa with his Team, has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of blocked drainages at Upper Mission Extension area in Benin City.
According to Hon. Idahosa, the exercise was prompted by reports of drainage blockage in the area, which poses significant risk of flooding if not addressed urgently. He emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent environmental hazards that could affect residents and businesses in the vicinity.
“Our mandate is to ensure the safety of lives and property, and this assessment allows us to take swift action to mitigate the risks associated with flooding. We urge residents to support Government efforts by properly disposing of waste and avoiding activities that contribute to drainage blockage,” he stated.
As part of the immediate response, the Executive Secretary has called on relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), including the Ministry of Environment and the Edo State Flood, Erosion, and Watershed Management Agency (EdoFEWMA), to swiftly intervene and address the blocked drainage issue to avert any risk of flooding.
The Edo State Government through EdoSEMA has reiterated its commitment to disaster prevention and response; assuring residents that necessary measures will be taken to clear the drainage and enhance the area’s flood resilience.
The assessment is part of the Government’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability and to protect communities from climate-related disasters.
