The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) on Wednesday convened a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin City ahead of the July 11, 2026 local government elections, calling for peaceful participation and adherence to electoral guidelines.

The meeting, held at the Commission’s office along Airport Road, brought together representatives of political parties, security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations, and the media.
Addressing participants, EDSIEC Chairman, Hon. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, described elections as the cornerstone of democracy, stressing that the success of the electoral process depends on the collective responsibility of all stakeholders.
He assured that the Commission remains committed to its constitutional mandate and is putting in place measures to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.
According to him, EDSIEC is strengthening the capacity of its personnel, improving logistics, and adopting best practices to guarantee efficiency, transparency, and integrity throughout the process.
Aifuobhokhan urged political parties and candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns and avoid inflammatory language, misinformation, and any form of electoral violence.
He also called on traditional rulers and religious leaders to use their influence to promote peace, unity, and tolerance among their followers, warning against actions capable of undermining community stability.
The EDSIEC boss commended security agencies for their support and urged them to maintain neutrality, professionalism, and vigilance before, during, and after the elections.
He further highlighted the role of civil society organisations as watchdogs for transparency, while describing the media as critical to voter education and information dissemination.He urged both groups to carry out their responsibilities with fairness and accuracy.
Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to credible elections, Aifuobhokhan encouraged eligible voters across the state to come out peacefully on election day and exercise their civic responsibility without fear or intimidation.
Political parties represented at the meeting included Accord, ZLP, AAC, APM, ADP, AA, PRP, APC, NRM, LP, APP, YPP, and PP.
