The Nigeria Football Federation has set September/November for the commencement of the 2020/2021 football league season in the country.
The NFF made this known in a press statement by its spokesperson, Ademola Olajire, on Friday.
It said the decision was in-line with the resolutions passed at an online meeting of the NFF Football Committee, which had in attendance the Chairpersons of all the National Leagues and the President of the Nigeria Referees Association.
Among the leagues listed to resume are the Nigeria Professional Football League, Nigeria Women Football League, Nigeria National League, National League One and the Aiteo Cup.
It noted that the leagues’ resumption “is subject to the full reopening of the country and the approval of the health authorities.”
Part of the statement read, “All dates for the 2020/2021 season to start are subject to the directives of the Federal Government in line with COVID-19 protocols.
“In addition, the full enforcement of licensing regulations and financial controls for the NPFL will commence from the 2020/2021 season. All clubs are required to comply, failing which they will be barred from participating.
“The Nigeria Football Federation will formally take the resolutions to the next General Meeting of its Congress for ratification. In the meantime, these resolutions have been formally communicated to the Federal Ministry of Youth and Social Development.”
It added that the NPFL ends at current Matchday 25 and the Points Per Game table will be used to rank the teams in order to ensure sporting merit and sporting fairness, adding that “there will be no promotion to, or relegation from, NPFL for the 2019/2020 season.
“The NNL 2019/2020 season which is at Matchday 3 – 5 and has been on break since December 17, 2019, is cancelled, null and void. There will be no promotion to, or relegation, from NNL.

The Nigerian women's basketball team, D'Tigress, has advanced to the semifinals of the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket with a dominating 83-47 victory over Cameroon. The six-time and defending champions will now face Senegal in the next stage of the competition. The quarterfinals match started with Cameroon taking an early lead, opening the game on a 4-0 run. However, Nigeria quickly responded, going up 7-4. The depth of Coach Rena Wakama's side soon overwhelmed the Cameroonian team, which appeared fatigued after a demanding late-night qualification clash against Angola. The Nigerian team dominated the game, showcasing their skill and experience. The team's depth and talent were too much for Cameroon to handle, leading to a convincing 36-point victory. D'Tigress will now face Senegal in the semifinals, looking to continue their impressive performance and make a strong bid for their seventh title. The team's next match will be a crucial test of their skills and determination.
