Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71, Nigeria Mourns Veteran Politician.

Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71, prompting an outpouring of condolences from political leaders and associates across Nigeria.

His family announced his death on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a statement signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan. The family said the former governor passed away that morning, describing his death as a profound loss to his relatives, the people of Delta State and the country.

Although the family confirmed his passing, the statement did not disclose the specific circumstances surrounding his death. Channels Television reported, citing a family member, that Uduaghan died at a hospital in Abuja following a period of illness.

From Medical Doctor to State Governor

Uduaghan was a medical doctor before entering public service, where he gradually rose through key administrative positions in Delta State.

He served as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and subsequently became Secretary to the Delta State Government, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.

In 2007, he became governor of Delta State, succeeding James Ibori. He was re-elected in 2011 and remained in office until 2015, completing two terms as the state’s chief executive.

His administration pursued development programmes focused on infrastructure, healthcare, human capital development and peace and security. His government also promoted the concept of “Delta Beyond Oil,” a vision aimed at encouraging economic development beyond the state’s dependence on petroleum revenue.

Tinubu, Political Leaders React

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed condolences following Uduaghan’s death, describing his passing as a significant loss to his family, Delta State and Nigeria.

In a condolence message, Tinubu acknowledged the former governor’s years in public service and his efforts to improve infrastructure, healthcare delivery and the welfare of residents during his tenure.

Other political figures have also begun paying tribute to the former governor, reflecting his longstanding involvement in Delta State politics and his relationships across Nigeria’s political landscape.

A Lasting Political Legacy

Uduaghan’s eight years as governor placed him at the centre of Delta State’s political and developmental affairs during a period when the Niger Delta faced significant security, economic and environmental challenges.

His administration’s policies and development priorities formed part of the broader efforts to improve public services and strengthen economic opportunities in the oil producing state.

As tributes continue, his death marks the end of a chapter in Delta State’s political history. His record in office, including his healthcare background, administrative experience and development agenda, will remain part of discussions about governance and public service in the state.

The family has expressed gratitude for the support and condolences received and prayed for comfort for those mourning the former governor. Funeral arrangements had not been detailed in the reports reviewed at the time of publication.
