Fourteen passengers narrowly avoided a deadly accident when their bus burst into flames while crossing the Old Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State. The driver sustained a minor injury in the incident, which caused panic and a lengthy traffic jam on the bridge as people tried to contain the fire.
The Toyota Hiace bus, en route to Asaba, Delta State, suddenly ignited midway across the bridge. Passersby and firefighters worked together to battle the flames, eventually extinguishing the fire before it spread to other vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began near the front of the vehicle, forcing passengers to escape quickly. Although the cause of the blaze remains unknown, firefighters encouraged the public to report emergencies promptly and recommended that all vehicles carry fire extinguishers.
The charred remains of the bus were later moved to the side of the bridge to ease traffic flow.
