“FRSC Cracks Down on Dangerous Overloading Along Bauchi Kari Corridor, Reinforces Road Safety Enforcement.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intercepted a dangerously overloaded vehicle along the Bauchi Kari road in Bauchi, raising fresh concerns over persistent violations of road safety regulations and the risks posed to passengers across Nigeria’s highways.
According to FRSC officials in Bauchi State, the vehicle found carrying passengers and goods far beyond its approved capacity was stopped during a routine patrol aimed at enforcing compliance with traffic laws. Authorities described the situation as a “serious safety breach” capable of resulting in fatal consequences, particularly on intercity routes where speed and road conditions can exacerbate risks.
The Corps reiterated that overloading remains one of the leading contributors to road traffic crashes in Nigeria. Excess weight not only reduces vehicle stability but also impairs braking efficiency and increases the likelihood of tire blowouts, especially under harsh weather and road conditions common in parts of northern Nigeria.
FRSC Sector Command representatives emphasized that the operation forms part of a broader nationwide enforcement strategy to curb unsafe transport practices. They warned that drivers and transport operators found violating safety regulations would face penalties, including fines, vehicle impoundment, and possible prosecution.
“The safety of road users is non negotiable,” an FRSC official stated, noting that public cooperation is essential to reducing avoidable accidents. Passengers were also urged to speak out against unsafe practices, including overloading and reckless driving, before embarking on journeys.
Road safety advocates have long called for stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns, particularly in high-risk corridors such as the Bauchi Kari route, which serves as a vital link for both commercial and passenger transport in the region.
