Goodluck Jonathan Denies Alleged ₦500 Billion Offer to Challenge Peter Obi in 2027 Presidential Election”

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed as false reports alleging that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest the 2027 presidential election against Peter Obi, describing the claims as baseless and entirely fabricated.

The reports, which circulated widely across social media and several online platforms, alleged that unnamed political interests had approached Jonathan with a massive financial inducement to return to the presidential race and challenge Obi in the next general election.

Reacting to the claims, Jonathan’s media office issued a statement categorically denying the allegation, stating that the former president neither received nor entertained any such offer. The statement urged Nigerians to disregard the report, describing it as misinformation designed to mislead the public and create unnecessary political speculation.

According to his spokesperson, Jonathan remains committed to promoting peace, democratic governance, and national unity. The former president also appealed to members of the public and media organizations to verify politically sensitive information before sharing or publishing it.

The denial comes as political conversations surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, with speculation over potential presidential contenders dominating public discourse. However, no major political party has officially nominated candidates for the election, making many of the circulating reports speculative.

Political analysts note that Jonathan has repeatedly maintained a cautious approach toward discussions about returning to active electoral politics. Since leaving office in 2015, he has focused largely on democracy advocacy, election observation missions across Africa, conflict resolution initiatives, and governance reforms.

The emergence of unverified reports involving prominent political figures underscores the growing challenge of misinformation in Nigeria’s digital information space. Media experts continue to emphasize the importance of fact checking and responsible journalism, particularly as the country gradually moves toward another election cycle.
