Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has hailed the Government of the People’s Republic of China and Nigeria Yongxing Steel Company Limited for the comprehensive renovation and upgrade of Ujabholo Grammar School, located in Uwessan, Esan Central Local Government Area.
The project is a flagship initiative under the China–Nigeria Cooperation in Education School Reconstruction Programme, facilitated by the Chinese Consulate-General in Lagos and backed by the Edo State Government. Executed with the theme “Love Builds Dreams, Steel Builds Foundations; China and Nigeria Nurture the Future Together,” the intervention has transformed the school’s infrastructure and learning environment.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Okpebholo described the project as a “symbol of friendship and progress,” expressing deep appreciation to the Chinese Government and the project partners.
“When they informed me of this initiative, I was confident that my community would feel the positive impact,” he said. “On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I express heartfelt gratitude to the Consulate-General and the Government of the People’s Republic of China. May this bond of goodwill continue to flourish.”
The event was particularly emotional for the Governor, who revealed that Ujabholo Grammar School was where his secondary education began.
“It has been over 20 years since I last stepped into this school. Returning today to commission its upgraded facilities brings me great joy,” he added.
Okpebholo also announced additional state-led improvements at the school, including the provision of electricity, installation of streetlights, construction of a perimeter fence and the establishment of a 250-computer CBT centre to further enhance digital learning.
He urged students and members of the community to protect and maximise the upgraded assets:
“This school is a precious gift. Use it responsibly to achieve academic excellence and discipline. Edo State remains open to partnerships that drive education, innovation, job creation, and sustainable development.”
In her remarks, Mrs Yan Yuqing, Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening educational ties with Africa.
“Educational cooperation is a core component of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation. As Nigeria is one of China’s key trade partners, we are committed to further expanding collaboration in infrastructure, agriculture, science and technology,” she stated.
The Commissioner for Education, Mr Paddy Iyamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, delivered a goodwill message in support of the initiative.
Principal of Ujabholo Grammar School, Mr Asemota, also applauded the intervention, noting that the improved learning environment will significantly boost student performance and morale.
The commissioning of the upgraded school underscores Governor Okpebholo’s continued commitment to quality education and sustainable partnerships that empower local communities and build Edo State’s human capital.
