The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Edo State branch, has commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his renewed investment in the state’s health sector, describing it as a major boost for healthcare delivery. In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, and made available to journalists in Benin City on Friday, the Association expressed excitement over the planned establishment of a modern Paediatric Centre at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Dr. Oseghale noted that the project, valued at ₦2.5 billion, would significantly improve child healthcare services in Edo State and beyond, given UBTH’s wide catchment area that serves over eight states. The NMA also hailed the Governor’s planned renovation of the Resident Doctors’ Quarters in Benin, as well as the payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund for members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) under Edo State Government employment. “We are particularly thrilled about the planned establishment of a modern Paediatric Centre at UBTH, a project estimated at ₦2.5 billion. This initiative will greatly enhance child care services in Edo State and beyond,” Dr. Oseghale stated. He added: “We also applaud the planned renovation of the Resident Doctors’ Quarters in Ezoti, Benin City, and the payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund for our members in the Association of Resident Doctors.” While congratulating Governor Okpebholo on his 55th birthday, the NMA chairman prayed for long life, good health, and greater wisdom for him to continue delivering quality service to Edo people and Nigeria at large.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service at St. Anthony Catholic Cathedral in Uromi, Governor Okpebholo expressed his deep gratitude to God for the successful outcome of the election and the favourable ruling by the election petition tribunal. He was accompanied by members of his administration and supporters.

The Governor announced the award of multiple road contracts as part of his strategic plan to drive comprehensive development across Edo State. He highlighted the crucial role of community cooperation in achieving sustainable growth and promised to deliver impactful projects that would uplift the lives of the people.

Reflecting on his journey, Governor Okpebholo recounted previous visits to the Cathedral during his senatorial and gubernatorial campaigns, where he sought divine guidance. He returned, this time, to offer thanksgiving and appreciate the church and community for their unwavering support.

“We are committed to transforming Edo State,” he said. “This administration will not relent in working to ensure our people enjoy the dividends of democracy.”

Among the major projects unveiled is the construction of a dual carriageway linking Uromi to Ubiaja. This project aims to improve transportation, boost economic activity, and ease mobility across the region.

“Work has already commenced on the Ubiaja end. We’re also expanding the lanes, a testament to our commitment to leave a lasting legacy in the Esan region,” the Governor stated.

In addition, he announced plans for alternative routes to ease traffic congestion. One such road will connect Uromi to Iworah via Unewa and Uwesan, with ongoing construction already visible on the ground.

Demonstrating continued support for community development, Governor Okpebholo made a personal donation toward the enhancement of St. Anthony Cathedral, emphasizing his bond with the Church and his belief in grassroots empowerment.

He reiterated his administration’s focus on infrastructural development, job creation, and overall improvement of the quality of life for Edo citizens.

In response, the Bishop of Uromi Diocese, Right Reverend Donatus Ogun Osa, commended the Governor for his proactive steps toward restoring peace in Uromi following recent unrest. He also praised the Governor’s humility and gratitude, noting that this was the first time a sitting Governor had returned personally to the Church to offer thanks.

Bishop Ogun urged residents of Uromi and the wider Edo State to support and collaborate with the Governor to ensure progress and prosperity for all.
