In a shocking incident in the Ogombo area of Ajah, Lagos State, a 17-year-old girl’s grandmother has been arrested for burying her daughter’s newborn baby alive. The grandmother’s actions came to light when neighbors became suspicious of the teenager’s pregnancy and alerted her mother.
According to reports, the grandmother was furious upon discovering her granddaughter’s pregnancy and went to great lengths to hide it from the public. She even denied the neighbors’ claims when they confronted her about the pregnancy. However, the truth eventually came to light when the teenager revealed that she had given birth to the baby without any assistance.
In a video clip that has since gone viral, the teenager can be seen being questioned by concerned neighbors. She claims that she called her mother after giving birth but was unaware of what happened to the baby afterwards. The resource manager who shared the video, Peace Ighodaro, alleges that the grandmother took the baby from her daughter, left the premises, and later told the teenager that the baby did not survive.
Ighodaro further accuses the grandmother of ending the baby’s life despite offers from people who were willing to adopt the newborn. It is reported that a neighbor witnessed the grandmother burying the baby alive in the backyard of their residence. When he rushed to dig up the grave and rescue the baby, it was already too late, and only the lifeless body of the infant was recovered.
The incident has left the community in shock and raised questions about why the neighbor did not intervene earlier when he saw the baby still crying before it was buried. The neighbor claimed that he saw the grandmother digging the ground while the baby was still alive.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the case and stated that the grandmother has been arrested. He revealed that the baby’s mother heard her baby crying after the grandmother took the baby from her. The grandmother later returned and informed her that the baby had died. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the baby was buried alive and had died when neighbors tried to rescue it.
The 17-year-old mother is currently in police custody, not as a suspect, but to ensure her well-being. The arrest of the grandmother highlights the seriousness of the crime committed and the need for justice to be served.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the rights and well-being of children. It is essential for communities to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities or cases of child abuse to the appropriate authorities. The Nigerian government has a responsibility to ensure that justice is served and that measures are put in place to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
