The Honourable Member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Adesuwa Osawaru, on Tuesday warmly received Dr. Mrs. Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor, the Director General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency (ESDA), and her management team during a courtesy visit to the People’s Office at the National Assembly, Abuja.
The visit was aimed at strengthening collaborative ties and exploring strategic partnerships between the Office of the Federal Lawmaker and ESDA towards harnessing the potential of the Edo diaspora community for the state’s development.
While welcoming the visitors, Hon. Osawaru commended Dr. Ogboro-Okor for her transformative leadership at ESDA and her proactive efforts in repositioning the agency for better engagement with Edo indigenes abroad. He described the role of the diaspora in national development as invaluable and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting legislative policies that will enhance diaspora contributions in areas such as healthcare, education, youth empowerment, and investment.
“The wealth of knowledge, experience, and remittances of our Edo sons and daughters in the diaspora is a vital asset for our state. We must create sustainable avenues to harness these resources for the greater good of our people,” Hon. Osawaru stated.
In her remarks, Dr. Ogboro-Okor appreciated the Honourable Member for his support and longstanding commitment to diaspora matters. She outlined the agency’s recent initiatives aimed at connecting Edo indigenes abroad with development opportunities back home, noting that Edo State is one of Nigeria’s most represented states in the diaspora.
She further disclosed that remittances from Edo indigenes abroad account for over 30% of Nigeria’s total yearly diaspora remittances, underlining the need for collaborative efforts to expand this economic advantage.
Both parties expressed readiness to work closely on joint initiatives that will benefit the state, especially in sectors like education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and investment drives. The meeting underscored Hon. Osawaru’s reputation for inclusive, effective representation and his dedication to building bridges between Edo State and its diaspora community.
