interview attached:
I’m here with Daisy Osakue of Italy who just competed in the discus at the World Championships. Went out to just over 56 today.
Daisy, how do you feel about the performance? I am not happy. I came here with the the goal to just try and do my best and go as close as possible to my personal record, my national record, and go close to finals.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to control myself in the ring and so the results didn’t show all the work I put in it.
Can you tell us a little about the time you’ve had representing Italy in the sport? What’s been your major achievements in your career today?
I was a finalist last year in the Tokyo Olympics. I have the Italian national record in the discus. I was the University champion in 2019. I was the European Throwing Cup champion this year and have different national titles in Italy. It’s been a nice ride with them.Fantastic.And I’m making the champions.
We love meeting athletes of Nigerian heritage. So could you give us some background on how your family came to Italy and how you came to represent Italy?
My parents, both did sports. They are from (Ogbe) at the State and my dad was in judo, my mom was Nambo. They moved to Italy years ago, almost 30 years ago. And that’s when I was born. And I’ve always been very sport-minded. So that’s when I started doing sports and ten years ago I started doing track and field and now it’s my job and it has given me the possibility to travel a lot and compete.
What made you choose discus in track and field?
I think discus chose me. I used to be a sprinter. My first national titles were in the Hoarders and then the knee injury on my left foot and then my now coach it’s like I think you have the qualities to be a good thrower and so that’s when our adventure started and she was right.
Fantastic. Now, should I say connections or roots back home in Nigeria? Do you ever get to go back there?
Oh, I’ve never been back. I mean, I’ve never been to Nigeria, unfortunately, but yeah, I have my entire family over there. My uncles, my aunties, my cousins, and everyone else. I love my culture, I love my traditions, I love my heritage. I love that my parents, both from Benin City. I love the fact that they used to train in Ogbe Stadium. It’s beautiful. I have all those stories in me, even though I’ve never been able to see them with my eyes. But I feel like I’m still keeping the tradition going, being Nigerian in another country and just showing how good Africans are.
Fantastic. So what’s next for you from this championship?
Hopes for maybe the world’s next year. The Olympics in two years. Oh, absolutely. In a month we’re going to be in the European Championship in Munich. So I hope to redeem myself there. And of course, the next long-term competition is out of mind. And definitely, I hope this is the last time things don’t go my way.
