“Ibadan Indigenes Dismiss Fayose’s Allegation Against Makinde Over Alleged Plot to Remove Olubadan’
Ibadan indigenes have strongly cautioned former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over his recent claims alleging that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is plotting to remove the Olubadan of Ibadanland. The community leaders described the allegation as reckless, unfounded, and capable of undermining the longstanding traditional stability of Ibadan.
Fayose had reportedly raised concerns suggesting political interference in the revered Olubadan institution, a statement that quickly triggered widespread reactions among stakeholders in Ibadanland. However, prominent voices within the city’s traditional and socio-political structures have dismissed the claim, insisting that the succession system of the Olubadan stool remains well-structured, transparent, and protected by established customary laws.
Community representatives emphasized that the Olubadan traditional institution is one of the most respected in Yorubaland, noting that its rotational succession system has historically prevented political interference and crisis. They urged the public to disregard what they described as politically motivated narratives that could create unnecessary tension within the state.
Observers note that the controversy highlights the sensitivity surrounding traditional leadership institutions in Nigeria, especially in cases where political figures comment on succession matters. Analysts have also called for restraint in public commentary to preserve the integrity and peace of culturally significant stools like that of the Olubadan.
As discussions continue, stakeholders in Ibadan have reiterated their commitment to protecting the sanctity of the Olubadan institution while urging political actors to avoid statements that could be interpreted as divisive or misleading.
