INEC Pushes for Increased Funding, Staff Welfare, and Electoral Reforms Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections.
As preparations gradually begin for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for increased financial support, improved staff welfare, and sustained investment in electoral infrastructure to strengthen the country’s democratic process.
The electoral body said adequate funding remains critical to ensuring transparent, credible, and efficient elections, stressing that long-term investments in technology, logistics, voter education, and personnel development are essential to delivering successful polls across the country.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the appeal during an engagement with the National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, where discussions focused on the commission’s funding requirements, operational challenges, and strategic preparations for future elections.
According to the commission, improving the welfare of permanent and ad hoc staff is equally important to maintaining professionalism, boosting morale, and safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process. INEC also emphasized the need for continuous upgrades to electoral infrastructure, including voter registration systems, election technology, and logistics management.
The commission noted that timely release of funds would allow for early planning, procurement of sensitive and non sensitive election materials, staff training, public voter awareness campaigns, and collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders well before the 2027 elections.
Political analysts have consistently argued that predictable and adequate funding for election management bodies is fundamental to strengthening democratic institutions and reducing last-minute operational challenges that often affect election administration.
With less than two years before Nigerians return to the polls, INEC’s renewed appeal underscores the importance of sustained institutional support to enhance electoral credibility, improve public confidence, and ensure that future elections meet both national and international democratic standards.
