International Day of the Girl Child: Edo Govt Vows to End Child Marriage  Hon. Eugenia Abdallah.

The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending child marriage and safeguarding the rights of the girl child across the state.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, stated this in a press statement to mark the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, with the theme “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights.”

Abdallah commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for prioritizing the welfare, safety and development of children in Edo State and for providing the leadership needed to strengthen child protection systems.

She said the Ministry has sustained various programmes, sensitisation campaigns and advocacy drives to promote awareness and full implementation of the Child Rights Law in the state.

According to her, child marriage deprives girls of their childhood, education and access to essential healthcare, while limiting their opportunities to fulfil their potential.

“Every girl deserves access to quality education, adequate protection, and the freedom to pursue her aspirations without the threat of early marriage or other harmful practices,” she said.

The Commissioner called on parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, community stakeholders, civil society organisations and other relevant institutions to join the collective effort to end child marriage and strengthen protection of girls’ rights.

She assured that the Ministry will sustain advocacy and collaboration with stakeholders to ensure every girl child in Edo State grows up in a safe, supportive and empowering environment.

“Investing in the girl child is investing in the future of Edo State. We must work collectively to end child marriage, uphold the Child Rights Law, and ensure that every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and realise her full potential,” Abdallah stated.
