Residents of Isibor Ewuare Village in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to the state government for urgent intervention in addressing the severe lack of basic infrastructure in their community.
The appeal was made over the weekend during a press briefing led by village leaders, who highlighted the absence of essential amenities such as electricity, functional schools, a market, and accessible roads. They noted that the community has relied solely on communal self-help efforts for survival and development.
One such initiative is the ongoing construction of a health centre, which the villagers have undertaken with limited resources. They are now seeking government support to complete the project.
Speaking at the briefing, the Ozukpogieva (Second-in-Command) of the village, Pa Igbinogun Felix Osevbunu, described the living conditions in the community as deplorable and called on the state government to extend its presence and support to the area.
“We are surviving through our own efforts, but the community cannot continue like this without proper government intervention,” Osevbunu said.
He also addressed recent allegations of land grabbing within the village, describing them as entirely false and unfounded. According to him, land grabbing is considered taboo in Isibor Ewuare, and the community adhered strictly to honesty and transparency in its dealings with land developers.
“The allegations are baseless and completely false. We do not engage in land grabbing or dishonest acts. Such claims are merely the fabrications of those who do not wish us well,” he said.
Pa Osevbunu reaffirmed the village’s loyalty to the Benin Kingdom and its monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, stating that no parcel of land is sold to more than one developer and that all land transactions are conducted in accordance with traditional protocols.
Supporting his claims, the Ozukpogieha (Third-in-Command), Pa Ogieriakhi Okpugie Eboigbe, and the village youth leader (Okaighele), Osayamen Odoruyi, also spoke at the briefing. They assured prospective investors and developers that Isibor Ewuare is a peaceful, law-abiding community committed to protecting investments.
“We will never act against the instructions of our great Oba because we understand the traditional consequences,” said Odoruyi. “The public should disregard the unfounded accusations being peddled against our community.”
The village leaders concluded by commending Oba Ewuare II for his efforts in promoting peace and development across Edo State and offered prayers for his continued reign.
