Italian Waste Workers Recover €1 Million Winning Lottery Ticket Mistakenly Thrown Away in Remarkable Rescue”

A team of waste management workers in southern Italy has recovered a winning lottery ticket worth €1 million after its owner accidentally threw it into the trash, bringing an extraordinary human interest story to a successful conclusion.

The incident occurred near Bari, in Italy’s Puglia region, where the anonymous lottery winner mistakenly believed the ticket had no value after a self service lottery terminal displayed the message “not payable.” The player interpreted the message as indicating the ticket had lost, unaware that it actually meant the prize was too large to be redeemed at a local retailer.

After a family member later realized the ticket matched the winning numbers, the owner rushed back to the shop where it had been discarded. However, by that time, the rubbish had already been collected by sanitation workers.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the local waste management company, SANB, launched an extensive recovery operation. Under the direction of company officials, workers traced the route of the refuse truck carrying the discarded waste before painstakingly searching through more than six tonnes of garbage.

Their persistence paid off when the winning ticket was found intact among the waste, allowing the owner to reclaim the life changing prize. According to SANB officials, the successful recovery was an exceptional effort that required careful coordination and determination.

The emotional winner reportedly broke down in tears upon learning that the ticket had been found. SANB Director Roberto Nicola Toscano described the recovery as “nothing short of miraculous,” adding that the search demonstrated the dedication and professionalism of the sanitation workers involved. In a lighter moment, Toscano revealed that members of the recovery team later bought a scratch card together and won €50, joking that perhaps some of the ticket’s good fortune had rubbed off on them.

The incident has attracted widespread international attention, highlighting not only an extraordinary stroke of luck but also the often overlooked role of public sanitation workers whose commitment helped prevent a million euro fortune from being permanently lost.
