In a significant legal development, the Kano State High Court, under the jurisdiction of Justice Ibrahim Karaye, has handed down a three-year prison sentence to internet fraudsters Benjamin Udeagwu and Benjamin Olamide. The verdict comes after both individuals pleaded guilty to one count of internet fraud during their arraignment by the Kano Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charges against Udeagwu and Olamide detailed fraudulent activities, including impersonation and inducing victims to deliver sums of money under false pretenses. The EFCC’s counsel, Abubakar Elbadawi and Fatima Mustapha, advocated for the appropriate conviction and sentencing.
Despite pleas for leniency from the defendants’ counsel, M.J Ella and M.E Ogah, emphasizing their remorse and first-time offender status, Justice Karaye delivered the judgment. Udeagwu received a one-year prison term or a fine of N20,000, while Olamide was sentenced to two years imprisonment, with an alternative fine of N20,000.
