“Kogi Strengthens Rural Healthcare Access as Governor Ododo Commissions Southward Hospital with Advanced Diagnostic Facilities”

The Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ahmed Ododo, has commissioned the Southward Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, marking a significant step toward expanding access to modern healthcare services in rural communities across Nigeria’s North Central region.
The newly inaugurated medical facility, located in the Kabba axis of Kogi State, is equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scan systems equipment typically concentrated in major urban hospitals. State officials say the project aims to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialized medical examinations and treatment.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, Governor Ododo described the hospital as part of a broader strategy to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, improve early disease detection, and enhance medical outcomes for residents of Kabba/Bunu and surrounding communities.
According to the governor, the establishment of the Southward Hospital aligns with his administration’s commitment to improving public service delivery through investments in health, education, and social welfare. He emphasized that access to quality healthcare remains central to sustainable development and economic productivity in the state.
Healthcare experts note that limited diagnostic capacity has long been a challenge in many Nigerian rural areas, often forcing patients to seek services in cities such as Abuja or Lokoja. The addition of MRI and CT scan facilities is expected to significantly shorten diagnosis timelines for conditions such as neurological disorders, trauma injuries, and chronic diseases.
Community leaders and healthcare stakeholders present at the commissioning welcomed the development, describing it as a long awaited intervention that could reduce medical tourism within the country and improve emergency response capabilities in the region.
The Kogi State Government also indicated that the facility would support local healthcare professionals through improved working conditions and access to modern medical technology, potentially helping to retain skilled personnel within the state.
Public health analysts say investments in diagnostic infrastructure are increasingly critical as Nigeria confronts rising cases of non-communicable diseases alongside persistent infectious health challenges. Expanding healthcare access beyond metropolitan centres remains a key priority highlighted by policymakers and international health partners.
The commissioning of the Southward Hospital reflects ongoing efforts by subnational governments across Nigeria to decentralize healthcare delivery and strengthen primary and secondary health systems, particularly in underserved communities.
